Volunteering

Here are the roles and responsibilities for Volunteers at The Pounds Project

Client Support and Engagement

  • Welcoming and Orientation: Greet clients, provide an overview of the services offered, and ensure they understand the rules and procedures of the site.
  • Harm Reduction Education: Distribute educational materials on safer drug use practices, overdose prevention, and the use of naloxone.
  • Direct Support: Assist clients in accessing harm reduction supplies (e.g., sterile needles, syringes, safe smoking kits), and provide clean injection equipment.
  • Overdose Response: Monitor clients for signs of overdose and administer naloxone or other emergency interventions as needed.
  • Referral Services: Guide clients to additional health and social services, such as addiction treatment, housing support, mental health services, and primary healthcare.

Site Maintenance and Operations

  • Cleanliness and Sanitation: Maintain a clean and safe environment by regularly cleaning surfaces, disposing of used supplies safely, and ensuring that the facility meets health standards.
  • Supply Management: Help manage inventory by tracking and restocking harm reduction supplies, ensuring there are enough materials available for clients.
  • Data Collection: Assist in recording data related to site usage, overdose incidents, and other relevant metrics while maintaining client confidentiality.

Advocacy and Education

  • Community Outreach: Participate in outreach activities to raise awareness about the services offered and to engage with potential clients and community members.
  • Stigma Reduction: Work to reduce stigma associated with drug use by providing accurate information and fostering a non-judgmental environment.
  • Training: Participate in and sometimes conduct training sessions on overdose response, harm reduction principles, and other relevant topics.

Administrative Support

  • Record Keeping: Assist with maintaining accurate records and documentation of client interactions, inventory, and incident reports.
  • Program Evaluation: Help in gathering feedback from clients and staff to improve service delivery and effectiveness.
  • Social Media: Promoting social media posts and encourage engagement within our online community

Additional Considerations

  • Confidentiality: Volunteers must maintain strict confidentiality to protect the privacy and safety of clients.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: It is essential to be culturally sensitive and respectful, recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences of clients.
  • Empathy and Non-Judgment: Volunteers should exhibit empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental attitude towards all clients.
  • Training and Certification: Volunteers might need to undergo specific training, such as naloxone administration certification, first aid, CPR, and harm reduction principles.
